This digital illustration of the beloved Grand Lake Theatre by acclaimed Bay Area illustrator Larry Hausen highlights the iconic rooftop sign, vintage cars, and architectural details of the historic landmark.
Whether you’ve seen a movie here, admired its activist marquee, or simply love Oakland’s cultural landmarks, this puzzle featuring a sunset scene of the theater brings the spirit of the city to your table, one piece at a time.
About the Grand Lake Theatre:
Built in 1926 as a vaudeville and silent movie house, the Grand Lake Theatre has become a treasured symbol of Oakland’s arts scene. Known for its 72x52-foot rooftop sign with 2,800 lamps and a Mighty Wurlitzer organ in the main auditorium, the theater has been lovingly restored under the ownership of Allen Michaan of Renaissance Rialto, Inc.
Variety Magazine included the theatre in its list of coolest theaters in the world. It remains a community beacon, recognized year after year in the East Bay Express "Best Place to See a Movie" poll, and famous for its politically charged marquee supporting peace, justice, and progressive causes.
