About the Artist Paul Lewin

Paul Lewin is a Jamaican-born artist who developed an early interest in art and culture during his Miami area childhood. His work ranges from small wood pieces to large scale murals and is known for blending Afrofuturism, Caribbean folklore, surrealism, and the natural world.

His paintings have appeared on four Octavia Butler novel covers and been featured in three previous jigsaw puzzles. He is a former worker owner at Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco and credits his time in the Bay Area with shaping his creative path. He has been nominated for both the Hugo Award and the World Fantasy Award.

Artist Statement Highlights

  • Began drawing at the age of five, inspired by sci fi, fantasy, and animated films 
  • Learned woodworking and creative exploration from his father
  • Moved to the Bay Area in 2004, deeply influenced by the mural and art scene of Oakland and San Francisco
  • Started his Caribbean folklore series in 2011, blending ancestral symbols with contemporary aesthetics
  • Held three solo shows at Betti Ono Gallery between 2015 and 2018
  • Views art as a way to explore connections between science, nature, spirituality, and identity
  • Considers the dream world and nature as essential themes in his work
