About the Artist: Paul Lewin
Paul Lewin is an internationally recognized painter whose work spans murals, gallery pieces, and small-format wood art. Born in Jamaica and raised in Miami, Lewin spent 17 years in the Bay Area, where his art flourished within a vibrant creative community.
Highlights of his career include:
- Four cover illustrations for Octavia Butler novels
- Three featured puzzles showcasing his visual narratives
- Nominations for both the World Fantasy Award and the Hugo Award
- Solo exhibitions at Betti Ono Gallery in Oakland

Lewin’s art is known for its fusion of Afrofuturism, Caribbean symbolism, and nature-based surrealism. His time as a worker-owner at Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco influenced his approach to collaboration, business, and sustainable creative practice.
Artist Statement Excerpt
"I began drawing at age five, inspired by sci-fi, fantasy, and my father’s love for nature and ancient cultures. Oakland’s street art and the murals of San Francisco deeply shaped my style. The Caribbean folklore series, which includes Microcosm, is my tribute to the legacy of my ancestors and the interconnectedness of all life."
